How to Change Address on Aadhaar Card: Easy Guide

Aadhaar holders can request an update to their residential address through the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) online portal or by visiting an authorised Aadhaar enrolment and update centre. The application requires the new address and supporting evidence, but submission alone does not guarantee approval.

Applicants should review the latest process, document requirements and applicable fees on the official UIDAI website before starting the request. The services are available through the UIDAI website and the myAadhaar portal.

Who can update an Aadhaar address?

An existing Aadhaar holder can apply when the residential address recorded in Aadhaar needs to be changed or corrected. Online applications generally require access to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar, as the process uses an OTP, or one-time password, to verify the applicant.

Those who cannot receive an OTP on their registered mobile number may have to visit an authorised Aadhaar centre. UIDAI also has a process for eligible residents who need to use proof of address belonging to a qualifying family member. Applicants should check the official instructions to confirm whether this option applies to them.

Documents required for an address update

Applicants using their own documents generally need an accepted Proof of Address (PoA) document supporting the address they want recorded. UIDAI’s accepted list may include eligible government-issued documents, utility bills and certain financial or residential records.

Before uploading or submitting a document, applicants should ensure that:

  • The document appears on UIDAI’s current list of accepted documents.
  • The name and address match the application details.
  • The document is valid and clearly readable.
  • The uploaded image or scan is complete and legible.

Requirements can vary depending on the method used for the update. A document showing an address may still be rejected if it does not satisfy UIDAI’s prescribed conditions.

Steps to update the address online

The online service is available through the myAadhaar portal. Applicants can follow these steps:

  1. Open the official myAadhaar website.
  2. Log in with Aadhaar details and complete OTP verification.
  3. Choose the address-update service.
  4. Enter the new address carefully.
  5. Upload an accepted Proof of Address document or use the applicable family-member-based process.
  6. Review all information before submitting the request.
  7. Pay the applicable fee, if required, and save the acknowledgement.

Applicants should verify the spelling, house number, street, locality and PIN code before submitting the form. An incorrect address or an unclear document could delay processing or result in rejection.

Once the request is submitted successfully, UIDAI provides a reference number that can be used to track the application. This number should be saved for future status checks.

How to update the address offline

People unable to complete the process online can visit an authorised Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra. The nearest centre can be located through UIDAI’s official website. Applicants should carry their Aadhaar details and the original supporting documents required for the update.

At the centre, inform the operator that an address update is required, complete the form and carefully check the information entered before confirming the request. An acknowledgement or update reference will be issued and should be kept safely for tracking the application.

The offline option can be useful for applicants who do not have access to their registered mobile number or require assistance in completing the application.

Aadhaar address update fee and status tracking

UIDAI lists a fee of ₹75 for a separate demographic update at an Aadhaar centre. Demographic information includes details such as the name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number and email address. Current UIDAI service information also lists address update as an online service carrying a ₹75 fee.

Fees and any temporary concessions may change, so applicants should check the latest UIDAI service page before making a payment.

After filing the request, applicants can use the status-checking service on myAadhaar. The reference number or other requested details must be entered to view whether the update has been processed. If an application is rejected, the applicant should examine the stated reason and follow the official instructions before filing a fresh request.
