A Swiss luxury watch valued at about $290,000 has been returned to a Tokyo store with a handwritten note apologising for its theft last week.
The Audemars Piguet timepiece was taken after a man posing as a customer tried it on and ran out of the shop while still wearing the watch.
The store later received a package containing the stolen item along with the apology note. The watch’s serial number was used to confirm that it was the same timepiece taken from the shop.
The store declined to comment on the incident. Tokyo police continue to look for the man on suspicion of theft.
The case follows another theft in August, when four luxury watches valued at 200 million yen, or about $1.3 million, were stolen from a different store in the same shopping complex.
