The Jalore-Sirohi Lok Sabha constituency in Rajasthan has emerged as a focal point in the state's political landscape, with the Congress nominating Vaibhav Gehlot, son of former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, for the upcoming elections.
Ashok Gehlot has been actively campaigning for his son, presenting him as a youthful leader committed to serving the constituents in all circumstances.
In contrast, BJP leaders have framed the contest as a "raja vs runk (king vs pauper)" showdown.
"Our candidate, contesting from this seat, is a humble farmer who campaigns on a modest two-wheeler," remarked Pramod Vashishth, Rajasthan BJP's media head. "It's a clear contest between privilege and humility. Our candidate doesn't flaunt luxury; he's accustomed to cost-cutting measures, symbolized even in his attire."
Echoing this sentiment, Pankaj Meena, another BJP leader, emphasized the symbolic difference in attire between the candidates. "It's a fight between royalty and commonality," he asserted.
Local BJP worker, Nimisha, underscored the unique challenges of the constituency. "Jalore-Sirohi's terrain, characterized by plains and mountains, demands resilience against scorching heat," she explained. "Can the Congress 'prince' endure campaigning under the relentless sun? It appears they've misjudged the local sentiment."
Criticism extended to the Gehlots' campaign strategy, with Nimisha highlighting their absence from the constituency. "While the father-son duo prioritize high-profile events, our grassroots leader engages directly with constituents," she observed.
Adding to the narrative, videos of Ashok Gehlot and Vaibhav Gehlot campaigning in South India circulated widely on social media, drawing criticism from BJP supporters who viewed it as evidence of detachment from local concerns.
During a Chennai event, Ashok Gehlot outlined potential benefits if Vaibhav were elected. "Vaibhav will prioritize the needs of Rajasthanis, ensuring seamless transitions between Tamil Nadu and their native villages," Gehlot pledged.
In response, Vaibhav Gehlot emphasized his commitment to the electorate, rallying support from migrant Rajasthanis alongside senior DMK leaders.
Meanwhile, the BJP's surprise candidate, farmer Lumbaram Chaudhary, has garnered attention for his grassroots credentials. His background as a former head of Sirohi Panchayat Samiti and his expertise in innovative farming methods in Israel have bolstered his candidacy.
Jalore-Sirohi, a predominantly rural constituency with a literacy rate of 54.86%, boasts 264,331 eligible voters, split almost evenly between genders. Historically, the BJP has maintained a stronghold, clinching victory in the last four Lok Sabha elections.
