Schools in several districts of Uttar Pradesh will remain closed on Saturday, September 26, following warnings of heavy rainfall and concerns over student safety.
In Lucknow, all schools affiliated with every board, covering Classes 1 to 12, have been ordered to remain shut on September 26. The Basic Education Officer issued the closure order in accordance with directions from the District Magistrate.
Prayagraj has also announced the closure of all schools from pre-primary level to Class 8 after the Meteorological Department issued a red alert and the district experienced continuous rainfall. In Kanpur, educational institutions up to Class 12 will remain closed on the same day because of the severe weather conditions.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday instructed senior officials to ensure swift relief and rescue operations in areas affected by the heavy rainfall across the state.
The Chief Minister took note of deaths, livestock losses and economic damage caused by the rain. He asked senior officials to visit affected areas and personally oversee relief and rescue work.
Officials were also directed to extend all possible support to affected families. The assessment and payment of compensation for damage caused by heavy rainfall and lightning strikes must be completed within 24 hours, he said.
Adityanath urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of lightning and intense rainfall. He also advised residents not to bathe in rivers or other water bodies during heavy rain and to remain particularly cautious in such conditions.
In Ayodhya, the district administration declared a holiday on September 25 for all schools, from nursery to intermediate level, across every board in view of the forecast of heavy rainfall.
The order, issued on the instructions of the District Magistrate, directs all concerned authorities to ensure strict compliance.
