Manu Bhaker, the star shooter who made history by securing two bronze medals at the Paris Games, will lead India as the flag bearer during the Olympic closing ceremony on Sunday, August 11.
By clinching a bronze in the individual 10m air pistol event, Manu secured India's first medal at the current Games, making her the first female marksman from India to achieve this feat.
Teaming up with Sarabjot Singh, she later won the 10m air pistol mixed team event, adding another bronze to her name.
"Yes, Manu has been chosen to be the flag bearer. She has done exceptionally well and deserves the honour," an IOA official told PTI.
The 22-year-old shooter from Haryana had earlier said it would be an honour to be India's as flag bearer.
"There are many in the contingent who are more deserving but it will be a real honour, if I am asked to," Manu had told PTI.
IOA has yet to announce a male flag bearer but is expected to do so in the next few days.
In addition to Manu's two medals, fellow shooter Swapnil Kushale also secured India's third medal, a bronze, in the men's 50m Rifle Three Positions event.
On Monday, shuttler Lakshya Sen will compete for the bronze, and the men's hockey team has advanced to the semifinals, bringing them closer to a medal.
Nisha Dahiya will kick off India's wrestling campaign today as she takes the mat in the women's 68kg event. Reigning Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will start his campaign on August 6.
