The wait continues for Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat as the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has postponed its verdict on her silver medal plea until August 16.

The decision came as a disappointment to her family, particularly her uncle Mahavir Phogat, who expressed frustration over the delays.

Vinesh had made a remarkable run in the women’s 50kg wrestling event at the Paris Olympics, reaching the finals and guaranteeing herself at least a silver medal.

However, in a twist of fate, she was disqualified for weighing in at 100 grams over the limit on the morning of the gold medal bout, leading to her being ranked last in the competition.

This decision, deemed harsh by many, prompted Vinesh to challenge the ruling through the United World Wrestling, with legal representation from Harish Salve.

The initial verdict was anticipated on August 10 but was postponed to August 13, only for it to be further delayed, with the CAS now expected to issue its final decision on August 16.

The prolonged uncertainty has tested the patience of the Phogat family, who remain hopeful that Vinesh's silver medal aspirations are still alive.

As of now, Vinesh has returned to India from the Games Village after the conclusion of the Olympics. Although her arrival was not publicly documented, Mahavir Phogat assured that the family is planning a hero's welcome for her, aiming to celebrate her achievements as if she were a gold medalist.

“We have been waiting for this decision for the last 4-5 days. We are hopeful that she will get a silver medal... We will welcome her like a gold medallist,” he said in an interview with India Today.

Vinesh, who shocked the sporting world by announcing her retirement immediately after the disqualification, received overwhelming support from fans and fellow athletes urging her to reconsider.

Mahavir Phogat echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of Vinesh continuing her wrestling career after a series of setbacks in previous Olympic campaigns. “After Vinesh comes back home, we will speak to her and try to convince her to participate in the 2028 Olympics. We will also focus on preparing other girls for the next games,” he stated.

Reflecting on Vinesh’s journey, Mahavir highlighted her impressive performance in the tournament, stating, “Vinesh defeated an Olympic gold medalist and a world champion to reach the final. She should at least be awarded a silver medal. She missed it by just 100 grams.”

As the family eagerly awaits the CAS verdict, their hopes remain steadfast that justice will prevail for Vinesh Phogat.
