Amid mounting criticism and public outrage across Maharashtra, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar—who also serves as the National President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)—on Monday directed the party’s youth wing president, Suraj Chavan, to step down from his position. The move came just a day after a violent clash broke out between NCP workers and members of the Chhava Sanghatna in Latur.
The confrontation occurred on Sunday when Chhava Sanghatna members, led by their leader Vijay Ghatge, confronted Maharashtra NCP unit president and Raigad MP Sunil Tatkare. The protest was reportedly triggered by a viral video showing state Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate playing Junglee Rummy, an online card game, inside the legislative assembly. In protest, the Chhava Sanghatna workers threw a deck of playing cards at the NCP leader during the altercation.

Following the incident, NCP workers retaliated and allegedly assaulted members of the Chhava Sanghatna. Suraj Chavan was reportedly involved in the attack, which drew sharp criticism from various quarters.
Taking swift action, Ajit Pawar issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), calling the incident “extremely serious and condemnable.” He further announced that he had instructed Suraj Chavan, state president of the Nationalist Youth Congress, to immediately resign from his post. Chavan has since complied with the directive and issued an apology for his role in the incident.
