AJSU names 8 candidates, JD(U) picks 2 for Jharkhand polls

AJSU Party chief Sudesh Kumar Mahto will contest from his traditional stronghold of Silli, while senior party leader Lambodar Mahto will run from the Gomia constituency.

The AJSU Party and Janata Dal (United) announced lists of eight and two candidates, respectively, for the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly polls on Sunday, amid signs of discontent over the seat-sharing agreement with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

AJSU Party chief Sudesh Kumar Mahto will contest from his traditional stronghold of Silli, while senior party leader Lambodar Mahto will run from the Gomia constituency.

The list also includes Sunita Chaudhary, wife of Giridih MP Chandraprakash Chaudhary, who will contest from Ramgarh, and Neeru Shanti Bhagat, spouse of former MLA Kamal Kishore Bhagat, who will fight from Lohardaga.

Former MLA Ram Chandra Sahis has been nominated from Jugsalai, with Nirmal Mahto standing from Mandu. Harelal Mahto will contest from Ichagarh, and Ajhar Islam has been fielded from Pakur.

From the JD(U), senior leader Saryu Roy will contest from his traditional seat, Jamshedpur West. He fought the 2019 polls from Jamshedpur East and defeated then Chief Minister Raghubar Das as an independent candidate.

The JD(U) has also fielded former minister Gopal Krishna Patar, popularly known as Raja Peter, from the Tamar Assembly seat, which is considered a stronghold of his. Patar had previously defeated JMM chief Shibu Soren in a by-election in Tamar, forcing him to resign from the Chief Minister’s post in 2008.

Patar secured bail in December 2023 in a murder case involving former minister Ramesh Singh Munda, whose son, Vikas Munda, is the incumbent MLA of Tamar from JMM.
