Delhi Chief Minister and BJP leader Rekha Gupta on Monday launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her visit to Kolkata, drawing comparisons between Banerjee and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal.
Addressing party workers and supporters, Gupta alleged that both leaders share a similar political style of branding government-funded schemes with their personal names. Referring to Mamata as “Didi” and Kejriwal as “Bhaiya”, she said, “There was Bhaiya in Delhi and Didi in Bengal. Bhaiya has been thrown out. Whose turn is it this time? Both are the same. They want their own name in everything. The money belongs to the people.”
Gupta questioned whether central funds allocated for the development of West Bengal were reaching the intended beneficiaries. She claimed that the Centre had released substantial financial assistance for the state, but alleged that the benefits were not reaching the poor.
“Why are the people of Bengal deprived of development? Where has all the money gone?” she asked.
The Delhi Chief Minister also raised concerns over women’s safety in the state. Despite the Chief Minister being a woman, Gupta alleged that women in Bengal do not feel secure.
“Bengal has the right to live with dignity. The dignity of women is being trampled here. I have never seen such a deplorable situation anywhere in the country before,” she said.
Calling for political change in the run-up to the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, Gupta claimed that the end of “terrorism, gangsterism, and greed politics” in the state was near. She asserted that the upcoming election would bring “real change” to Bengal and accused the ruling party of shielding “intruders” while ignoring the voices of ordinary citizens.
With Mamata aiming for a fourth consecutive term in office, political observers view Gupta’s remarks and her emphasis on the so-called “Delhi Model” as part of the BJP’s broader strategy to intensify its campaign in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.
