RJD leader Awadh Bihari Chaudhary was removed as Bihar Assembly Speaker on Monday after the ruling Bihar government - NDA moved a no-confidence motion against him, which was taken up by the state assembly here.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Nandkishore Yadav moved the no-confidence motion against the Speaker. A no-confidence motion moved by the ruling NDA against the Speaker received the support of 125 MLAs, while 112 members voted against it in the 243-strong assembly.
Chaudhary, who belongs to the RJD, had earlier refused to step down after his party lost power a fortnight ago when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar snapped ties with 'Mahagathbandhan' and returned to the BJP-led coalition.
In the 243-strong assembly, a total of 128 MLAs belong to the NDA, which also includes the JD(U) headed by the chief minister, ex-CM Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM, and an Independent MLA Sumit Kumar Singh, who is a minister.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will face a floor test or trust vote today. JD(U) on Sunday oozed confidence over its national president Kumar winning the trust vote.
The motion is considered to be successful if the majority passes it after it is put to vote. Historically, the process has mostly been used to remove assembly and deputy speakers.
