BJP appoints Mohan Yadav as new Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh

In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced Ujjain South MLA Mohan Yadav as the new chief minister-elect for Madhya Pradesh on Monday. The decision was made during a meeting held at the BJP headquarters in Bhopal, where the 58-year-old leader was elected leader of the BJP legislative party.

Narendra Singh Tomar, the union minister who stepped down after securing victory in the assembly elections, has been named as the new assembly speaker. Mohan Yadav, known for his affiliation with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), previously served as the higher education minister in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government.

The BJP had secured a resounding victory in the just concluded Madhya Pradesh assembly election, winning 163 out of 230 seats and successfully overcoming anti-incumbency challenges.

Who is Mohan Yadav?

Mohan Yadav entered the political arena with his first election as an MLA in 2013 and was re-elected in the subsequent 2018 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election. His influence within the state's political landscape was further solidified when he took the oath as a cabinet minister on July 2, 2020, in the government led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Born on March 25, 1965, in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav has a longstanding association with the BJP and is recognized not only for his political endeavours but also as a businessman.

In the recent 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly election, Mohan Yadav successfully defended his seat in the Ujjain South constituency, winning by a margin of 12,941 votes against Congress candidate Chetan Premnarayan Yadav. This victory marked his third consecutive term as an MLA, having secured 95,699 votes. The Ujjain South constituency, situated in the Malwa North region and falling under the Ujjain Lok Sabha constituency, has been a stronghold for the BJP since 2003.
