BJP's tally in the Rajya Sabha has fallen below 90 for the first time in several years, but the party is confident of regaining its strength and even making gains in the upcoming by-elections to fill the existing vacancies.
The BJP-led NDA is expected to win two seats each in Bihar, Maharashtra, and Assam, and one seat each in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Tripura, thanks to their numerical superiority over the opposition. Additionally, the four new nominated members are likely to support the government's agenda, further bolstering the treasury benches.
The current strength of the Rajya Sabha is 226, with the BJP having 86 members, followed by the Congress with 26 and the Trinamool Congress with 13. There are 19 vacancies in the Upper House, with the BJP hoping to increase its tally and consolidate its position.
The Congress, on the other hand, is looking to win the lone seat in Telangana at the expense of the BRS, but its gain will be offset by the BJP's expected win in Rajasthan. The BJP is also confident of winning the solitary seat in Haryana, while the Congress hopes to gain support from independent and regional party MLAs ahead of the assembly polls in October.
The Election Commission is yet to announce the date for elections to fill the 11 vacancies caused by the resignation of members, including 10 who were elected to the Lok Sabha and one who joined the Congress. Four vacancies are from Jammu and Kashmir, where there is no assembly currently.
The by-elections to the Rajya Sabha are crucial as they will impact the numerical strength of various parties in the Upper House, affecting the passage of bills and the functioning of Parliament.
