The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, suggesting that he may have confused the Indian economy with that of Pakistan. This response comes after Gandhi's recent comments where he called India's economy 'dead.' In a post on X, BJP national spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill asserted that the Indian economy is "alive & kicking" and urged the Congress MP to be more fact-based in his statements.
Shergill highlighted several of India's economic achievements, including being the world's fourth-largest economy, the second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, the third-largest automobile manufacturer, and having the fourth-strongest stock market. This is not the first time the BJP has accused Gandhi of siding with Pakistan or promoting its propaganda. The previous month, the BJP criticised him for suggesting that no country supported India following the Pahalgam terror attack, a claim the party deemed as 'Pakistan's fake narrative.'
The controversy began on Thursday when Gandhi endorsed US President Donald Trump's criticism of the Indian economy. Gandhi stated that "everyone knows" the Indian economy is "dead" except for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
He also accused the BJP-led government of destroying the country's economic, defense, and foreign policies, claiming they are "running the country to the ground." In his remarks to reporters, Gandhi expressed his approval of Trump's comments, saying, "I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact."

Gandhi's comments followed Trump's announcement of a 25% import duty and an unspecified penalty on goods from India. Trump had also made a controversial statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, suggesting that India and Russia could "take their dead economies down together."
Several other BJP leaders have also flayed Gandhi for his remarks. Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Shukla called Trump's statement "completely wrong" and said, "Our economic condition is not at all weak... Trump is living in a delusion." Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya also weighed in, calling Gandhi's remarks a "shameful" insult to the Indian people.
Malviya argued that despite a global slowdown, India remains the world's fastest-growing major economy, with the IMF and World Bank having revised growth projections upward. "This is not a dead economy. This is a surging, resilient India," Malviya declared.
