The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised Congress on Thursday for displaying a distorted map of India at the venue of the Congress Working Committee meeting in Belagavi, Karnataka.

The BJP accused Congress of "appeasement politics" and questioned whether the map was linked to George Soros, a Hungarian-American philanthropist who the BJP claims supports critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the map on the banner excluded Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Aksai Chin from India. He suggested this showed Congress was working with forces trying to harm India.

Trivedi pointed out that a similar map had been shared by Congress’s ally, Tamil Nadu's ruling party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, in October last year, leaving out PoK and Aksai Chin.

He also noted that Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor had done the same in 2020 and 2022. Trivedi questioned if this was a coincidence or part of an anti-India plan, even asking, "Is this coming from Soros' secret service?"

Trivedi also claimed Congress supported people who spoke about dividing India, such as during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) when some people discussed cutting the "Chicken’s Neck"—a narrow land corridor in West Bengal connecting the northeast states to the rest of India. He asked why Congress was involved in such discussions.

Trivedi reminded Congress that as the main Opposition party, its members of Parliament had sworn to protect India’s unity and integrity. He questioned whether Congress was violating the Constitution by promoting division within the country based on regions, castes, and classes.

He also referred to a Congress leader in Karnataka who had called for the state to have its own nation, claiming it paid more taxes. Additionally, Trivedi mentioned a statement by former Union minister Saifuddin Soz, who suggested Kashmiris would prefer independence if they could choose freely.

He questioned if there were plans within Congress to divide India further or create divisions among the people.
