The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday launched a sharp attack on the INDIA bloc, questioning its coherence and political viability in response to recent remarks made by senior Congress leader and former Union finance minister P Chidambaram.
At an event held on Thursday, Chidambaram expressed doubts about the current state of the Opposition alliance. He said he was "not sure" whether the INDIA bloc was "totally intact" and suggested there was still time to "put it together," although at present it appeared to be “frail”.
Reacting strongly to Chidambaram's comments, BJP national spokesperson Syed Zafar Islam said the Congress veteran had effectively acknowledged the alliance’s lack of unity and direction. “Chidambaram ji has admitted that this ghamandiya (arrogant) alliance has no basis, no future. We have said time and again that this INDI alliance is a picnic alliance which keeps travelling from place to place seeking to hatch a conspiracy against the BJP,” Islam said.
He further claimed that the Congress, along with the alliance, had no political future. “Today, he has admitted that neither this alliance nor the Congress have any future… several wise Congress leaders have admitted that the BJP is a formidable organisation dedicated to the cause of the nation,” he added.
Highlighting what he described as the achievements of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, Islam said India had grown stronger under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He cited national security and military assertiveness as key areas of progress. “Under the BJP government at the Centre, terrorists have been hit at their very doorsteps. It was possible because of the political will shown by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who gave a free hand to the armed forces,” he said.

Islam also took a dig at Chidambaram’s past tenure as finance minister, contrasting the current economic position of India with that during the UPA era. “If you talk about the economy, when Chidambaram ji was finance minister, our economy was ranked 14th in the world. After 2014, when the BJP came to power, India now stands as the fourth-largest economy,” he asserted.
The BJP spokesperson further alleged that the INDIA bloc had come to terms with its diminishing prospects, while asserting that the BJP-led NDA would continue to rule for decades to come. “The INDIA alliance has realised it has no future. The BJP-led NDA will remain in power for the next 50 years,” Islam claimed.
He concluded by saying that the strength of India’s economy and international standing were direct results of the Modi government’s decisive leadership. “The country has become stronger, the economy has become stronger… and this is all due to determined leadership. The INDI alliance has only one goal: to target the central government and Modiji. But the people have consistently supported him. The alliance knows it has no future—just like the Congress,” Islam said.
