Gujarat, often characterised by its steady political landscape, suddenly found itself at the centre of speculation following a 25-minute closed-door meeting at the Gandhinagar Circuit House. The meeting between India's Home Minister and Shankarsinh Vaghela, a prominent critic of the BJP, has set the political circles abuzz.

 

Shankarsinh Vaghela, now 84, has a history in Indian politics.

Starting as an RSS leader, he began his political journey with the Jan Sangh before becoming a senior leader in the BJP.

His career took a dramatic turn when he rebelled against the BJP, formed his party, and ultimately became the Chief Minister of Gujarat. 

 

Vaghela's is extensive, having served as Union Minister of Textiles in Manmohan Singh's cabinet, as well as holding multiple terms as an MLA, Lok Sabha MP, Rajya Sabha MP, and Leader of the Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly. He also held a key position as National Secretary for the NCP.

 

The timing of this meeting is critical. The BJP's stronghold in Gujarat is currently facing challenges.

A series of tragedies in Surat, Morbi, and Rajkot, where numerous lives were lost, have been widely perceived as administrative failures. 

 

Additionally, the state party is on the lookout for strong leadership as the term of the current party president, C. R. Patil, concludes in December. 

 

The last election, although a win for the BJP, revealed a shift in voter sentiment, with the party facing tough contests in ten constituencies, a stark contrast to their previous dominance.

 

In this context, Amit Shah's meeting with Vaghela, a long-standing critic of the BJP since 1996, is seen as a significant move, potentially signalling a strategic recalibration by the party's high command.

 

Vaghela, however, downplayed the significance of the meeting, telling the media that it was merely a cordial discussion over tea, with a focus on seeking guidance for his son, Mahendrasinh Vaghela's political future. 

 

Despite this, speculation is rife that the meeting could at the very least pave the way for Mahendrasinh to join the BJP, potentially shaking up the party's prospects in the Kapadvanj constituency, where the Vaghela family holds considerable influence.
