Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Sunday said that the government is open to discussing major issues, including Operation Sindoor, during the monsoon session of Parliament, which begins on Monday. Rijiju made the remarks at an all-party meeting convened ahead of the session, where he also stressed the importance of collaboration between the ruling and opposition parties for the smooth functioning of the House.
“We are very much open to discussing important issues like Operation Sindoor in Parliament,” Rijiju said. “There should be government-opposition coordination in running Parliament smoothly.” His comments come at a time when the Opposition has announced its intent to raise several contentious matters, including the recent claim by former US President Donald Trump that he mediated between India and Pakistan, resulting in a ceasefire.
Responding to this, Rijiju assured that the government would respond to the Trump-related issue during the session. “The government will respond appropriately in Parliament,” he said. Rijiju also addressed another politically significant development—the motion to remove Justice Varma. He confirmed that the petition has gained traction, stating, “The number of signatures of MPs for the motion to remove Justice Varma has already crossed 100.”
Opposition Gears Up to Corner Government
The monsoon session is expected to be stormy, as the Opposition plans to target the government over multiple issues. Key topics include alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, and Trump’s controversial ceasefire claim.
At the all-party meeting, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said the party has formally demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi address the House regarding Trump’s claim, as well as the lapses that led to the Pahalgam attack and the ongoing electoral roll revision in Bihar. Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh also raised strong objections, describing the SIR process as a “poll scam” and expressing concern over Trump's repeated assertions that he facilitated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Key Attendees and Government Representation
The all-party meeting was chaired by Union Minister JP Nadda, who is also the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha. Kiren Rijiju and Minister of State Arjun Ram Meghwal represented the government side.
Prominent opposition leaders present included Congress MPs Gaurav Gogoi and Jairam Ramesh, NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader Supriya Sule, DMK MP TR Baalu, and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale from the Republican Party of India (A). Despite the friction, the government reiterated its commitment to conducting a debate-driven, constructive session, signaling a willingness to engage on the issues raised by the Opposition.
