Cong approached party for RS 'seat deal', says NC spokesperson

As speculations have begun in the political corridors of J&K,  National Conference Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq on Monday rejected reports suggesting that the party might offer a Rajya Sabha seat to Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari. He said that while discussions are ongoing between Congress and NC as alliance partners, the final decision on seat-sharing will be taken by the party’s high command.

J&K National Conference spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq

As speculations have begun in the political corridors of J&K,  National Conference Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq on Monday rejected reports suggesting that the party might offer a Rajya Sabha seat to Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari. He said that while discussions are ongoing between Congress and NC as alliance partners, the final decision on seat-sharing will be taken by the party’s high command.

“Yes, Congress has approached us, they are our alliance partners and it’s their right to initiate discussions. But ultimately, the decision will be taken by our leadership. There’s still time till the 13th and by then, whatever decision has to be made will be made,” Sadiq said.

He added that within the National Conference, some leaders believe the party should contest the Rajya Sabha election independently, given the “sacrifices made during the recent Assembly polls.”

“There’s a thought within the party that this time NC should go independently. But the final call rests with the high command,” he said.

Rejecting the speculation about giving a Rajya Sabha seat to Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari, Sadiq said, “When we already have so many capable leaders within our party, why would we take someone from outside? That, I believe, is the clear answer.”

Reacting to the Chief Education Officer (CEO) Baramulla’s circular warning school education employees against misuse of social media, Sadiq said the matter is being looked into by the Education Ministry to determine how the order was issued and under whose directions. He also criticised the PDP for its reaction to the order, saying the directive was first introduced during Mehbooba Mufti’s tenure as Chief Minister in 2017.

“This order actually started in 2017 when Mehbooba Mufti was the Chief Minister. The same order has just been repeated now. If it was wrong in 2017, it’s wrong today; if it was right then, it’s right now,” he said. Sadiq added that NC will review the circumstances surrounding the order’s reissuance.“We’ll examine how and why this order was issued, and once we know, we’ll inform the public,” he said, adding that PDP’s criticism “doesn’t hold ground since they were the ones who brought the order in the first place.”
