Days after cross voting during Rajya Sabha polls, J&K Congress for the first time broke silence over the issue asking its alliance partner evaluate and introspect as to what happened during the polls and how BJP managed to grab one seat despite no numbers by its side.
AICC general secretary and senior leader of J&K G A Mir has said that the National Conference did not pursue the fourth seat; those elements who betrayed during the Rajya Sabha elections need to be identified,” they should investigate the matter.
Ghulam Ahmad (GA) Mir, the Jammu and Kashmir Congress President, urged the National Conference (NC) to introspect following cross-voting during the 2025 Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir. This call came after the NC, despite having the numbers, failed to secure all four seats and lost one to the BJP due to invalid votes and suspected cross-voting within its ranks.
The statement from the Congress's GA Mir is part of the political fallout from this event, which highlighted internal fissures within the NC. As for the background of the cross voting controversy, it was on October 24, 2025, the biennial election for four Rajya Sabha seats was held in J&K. As for the outcome , NC won three seats, but the BJP secured a surprise fourth seat. The vote count revealed a series of invalid votes, which increased with each round of polling and ultimately hurt the NC's tally.
Following the loss, the Abdullahs (Dr. Farooq and Omar Abdullah) of the NC suggested that the party was "betrayed by supporters," leading to the defeat. Most interesting part of the whole 'game' of one up manship remains that despite Congress being unhappy with its partner NC over what they described as 'unfair' in offering a risky seat to the party for RS polls, Congress leadership chose to stay away from the polls , yet the party declared its MLAs would support NC candidates in the polls. This strategy was adopted just to keep BJP's prospects of winning impossible. Yet BJP managed to secure one seat comfortably, much to annoyance of Congress and NC as well.
