Congress has launched a sharp attack on the PM Narender Modi led government over India’s foreign policy, questioning New Delhi’s response to the growing warmth between the United States and Pakistan. The party has said closeness between the two countries raises serious questions.
In a strongly worded statement, senior Congress leader Pawan Khera said that senior American leaders, including US President Donald Trump and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, have repeatedly praised Pakistan and its military leadership, including Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir.
The Congress leader alleged that despite Washington’s increasing engagement with Islamabad, the Indian government continues to display enthusiasm in its ties with the United States without expressing any visible diplomatic concern.
Referring to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Khera claimed that anti-India rhetoric emanating from Pakistan’s establishment has contributed to regional instability. He questioned whether the Centre has adequately conveyed India’s concerns to the United States regarding its growing outreach to Pakistan.
Khera further argued that one would have expected at least some diplomatic discomfort or a reassessment of priorities in India’s engagement with Washington. Instead, he said, the government appears willing to accommodate American demands, including on trade-related issues. The Congress leader asked whether there is more to the evolving US-Pakistan relationship than what is publicly visible and called on the government to clarify its diplomatic strategy.
The remarks come amid an ongoing political debate over India’s foreign policy priorities, strategic partnerships, and regional security concerns. The government has maintained that India-US relations are based on mutual interests and continue to grow across defense, technology, trade, and geopolitical cooperation.
The BJP-led government has not officially responded to Khera’s latest remarks. However, government representatives have consistently defended India’s foreign policy, stating that the country engages with global powers based on national interests while maintaining an independent strategic position. As political exchanges intensify, the debate over India’s approach toward both Washington and Islamabad is likely to remain a key talking point in the coming weeks.
