In a big jolt to the INDI Alliance in Jharkhand, Congress MP Geeta Koda from the Chaibasa constituency joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday.

The joining ceremony took place at the State BJP headquarters, where State BJP chief Babulal Marandi and Leader of Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri welcomed Koda into the saffron fold.

The Koda family, known for its political clout in the Kolhan area, has been a formidable force in Jharkhand politics, securing electoral victories since 2000.

Geeta Koda's husband, Madhu Koda, previously served as an independent MLA before assuming the role of Chief Minister in 2006.

He is currently facing charges of coal scam, money laundering and disproportionate assets and was convicted on these charges by the court.

It is being considered that the saffron party keeping in purview the stronghold of Kodas in Kolhan division has made the move.

Marandi, adorning Geeta Koda with the party flag, expressed disdain for the lack of respect within the Congress ranks, citing the party's failure to honour its leaders' sentiments.

Speaking on her decision to switch allegiance, Geeta Koda criticised the Congress for its politics of appeasement, alleging that the party, which claims to represent all, is dominated by a single family.

She cited discomfort within the Congress and lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership style, emphasising her commitment to public welfare under the BJP banner.

Geeta Koda's transition to the BJP comes amidst speculations of expanding the party's influence in the Kolhan region and securing victory in the Chaibasa seat.

Bauri, highlighted the BJP's commitment to achieving a Congress-free India, highlighting the lack of respect and failure to uphold Jharkhandi sentiments within the Congress ranks.

He noted the trend of veteran leaders, including Geeta Koda, aligning with Narendra Modi's vision for a developed India.
