Condemning the political violence in Tripura, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau has accused the incumbent BJP of creating unsafe environments professing that their “candidates have been deliberately stopped from filing notifications,” ahead of Panchayat elections on August 8.
“Ever since the announcement of the date of the elections to the local bodies, the CPI(M) and opposition candidates and their supporters have been under relentless attacks by goons owing allegiance to the ruling party. Candidates of the CPI(M) have been forcibly prevented from filing their nominations by resorting to savage assaults against them and their supporters.,” claimed the Polit Bureau in a statement.
The Polit Bureau has blamed BJP of pursuing “single- mindedly” the agenda of annihilating the opposition in the state. The statement also mentioned the use of “intimidatory tactics” by the ruling party and creating an “atmosphere of terror in the state.”
“Since 2018, 30 members and workers of our party have been killed. Scores of leaders and workers of the Party have been injured and hospitalised consequent to these brutal attacks.”
The Left party further mentioned, the leading party has openly “threatened to kill” the candidates from the opposition those trying to file nominations. Plus many times, the convoy of prominent leaders has been attacked in the presence of police personnels. The opposition was also forcibly banned from attending an all-party meeting convened by election officials at various places.
On July 13, a CPI (M) candidate for south Tripura Zila, Badal Shil was murdered for which the Polit Bureau has indicted the ruling party in Tripura. “In one such incident on July 13 Badal Shil a CPI(M) candidate for the South Tripura Zilla Parishad was killed by BJP goondas,” maintained the statement by CPI-M Polit Bureau.
The front has also moved the High Court ahead of the three-tier elections demanding just and security of democracy in the upcoming elections. Narayan Kar, convener of the Left Front said, “Whether the state government wants the opposition candidates to contest in the Panchayat poll or not is really doubtful. The blocks should be made free from the grip of the ruling party cadres so that the opposition candidates can file their nominations freely, or else, the poll will be a farce,” affirmed Kar.
The statement came in a bid to ensuring a free and fair election in the state after the six-member contingent of Left Parties met the state election commissioner on Saturday and placed a four point dispense of demands before him.
