Delhi Police has released protesters and other individuals detained during the security crackdown ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led demonstration in the national capital. CJP leaders, however, remain in custody and are expected to face further legal proceedings.
The detentions took place after security arrangements were intensified across Delhi on October 10, ahead of the planned protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
CJP leaders continue to remain in custody
People detained at different centres across the capital have been released, while the CJP leaders have not yet been freed. The next steps in the legal process involving the leaders have not been clarified.
Police had placed barricades and set up blocking points at several locations to prevent protesters from reaching the designated protest venue. Detention centres had also been arranged across different districts of Delhi as part of the security plan.
Protest linked to electoral process concerns
The CJP and other groups had planned the demonstration against Gyanesh Kumar over concerns related to electoral processes and changes to voter lists under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The proposed protest led to a substantial police deployment across the national capital, with preventive measures introduced at multiple locations to restrict the movement of demonstrators towards central Delhi.
The detention of protesters and political figures brought attention to the police response to the planned demonstration. The release of several detainees marks a fresh development, while the custody of the CJP leaders and the legal proceedings they may face remain unresolved.
Further details on the leaders’ detention and the subsequent legal process are awaited.
