Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh triggered a political storm on Saturday with a controversial comment about state BJP chief and Khajuraho MP V.D. Sharma.
Responding to the Sharma’s accusation that the he has “strong connections with terrorist organisations”, the veteran Congress leader said, “If V.D. Sharma thinks I am a supporter of terrorist organisations, ‘toh mujhe unki napunsakta pe nirasha hoti hai’ (I regret his impotency).”
The Congress leader made the remark during a joint press conference at the CPI-M office in Bhopal. Singh also highlighted the disparity in representation of Muslims in government jobs despite literacy rates among Muslims, Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST) being similar.
BJP leaders in Madhya Pradesh condemned the comment as derogatory. State BJP members circulated videos of past controversies involving Singh, with some making personal remarks about his family life.
Sharma refrained from retaliating with similar language but vowed to continue exposing Congress leadership. "I have respect for Digvijaya Singh, so I won’t use such words. But what he said doesn’t suit his stature," Sharma said.
Sharma also accused Congress of attempting to take away reservations from SC/ST communities and grant them to Muslims, claiming Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already exposed these plans.
BJP minister Vishwas Sarang criticised Singh for frequently making 'below the belt' remarks, while another BJP leader, Rameshwar Sharma, accused Singh of trying to position himself as the "next Jinnah."
