Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan was detained by the Enforcement Directorate on Friday shortly after he was released on bail from Rampur jail.
The action was taken outside the jail premises in connection with an alleged money laundering case. The ED is expected to complete the arrest formalities and produce Khan before the Ghaziabad court designated to hear cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The case concerns Khan, the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust and other individuals. The investigation focuses on the alleged diversion of funds and other resources during the construction of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur.
On Wednesday, the ED attached land and buildings belonging to the university. The properties, located in Jauhar Nagar village, have an estimated current market value of approximately ₹1,170 crore.
Mohammad Ali Jauhar University is owned by the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust, which was founded and is controlled by Azam Khan. He also serves as the institution’s honorary chancellor.
In its investigation under the PMLA, the ED identified assets worth ₹426.46 crore as alleged proceeds of crime. The agency has alleged that government funds, construction materials and donations received from contractors involved in public works were diverted towards the development of the university campus.
The attachment value was calculated after comparing the assessed construction cost of the campus with expenditure that the ED considered to have been supported by legitimate sources.
