The Special Prevention of Money Laundering Court in Ranchi granted five-day remand of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren to Enforcement Directorate on Friday. The court of Principal District and Session Judge, Dinesh Rai had reserved its judgement on remand of Soren on Thursday after arguments in the case. It granted five-day remand of the former CM to ED on Friday.
The former CM also received a setback from the Supreme Court on Friday when the Apex court declined to hear his petition against his arrest by ED. The Supreme Court asked Soren to approach the Jharkhand High Court first.
ED will now question Hemant Soren, lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi, in an alleged land grab case and accusations of money laundering. The ED had sought a remand of 10 days of Soren but it was allowed five days remand.
Soren was arrested on Wednesday by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to a land scam on Wednesday night after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader demitted the office of chief minister of the state.
The ED claims it has evidence that Soren is the key beneficiary in alleged land-related irregularities in Ranchi, where a network of brokers and businessmen were allegedly working over the years to create fake deeds of landed parcels by forging records in the registrar offices and further selling them off.
