The Indian Youth Congress protested on Thursday against what they called the "anti-youth" Union Budget. The group also protested the deportation of 104 Indians from the US, burning effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump.
A senior police officer said that more than 20 activists were detained during the protests.
The protests were led by Indian Youth Congress president, Uday Bhanu Chib. Chib criticised the deportation, saying the Indian citizens were sent back in an inhumane way, with some in handcuffs and chains.
"This is shameful and an insult to India. The Prime Minister will have to answer for this. When our government knew that Indians were being deported, it should have talked to the US and arranged commercial flights," he said.
On Wednesday, a US military plane carrying 104 Indian citizens landed in Amritsar. These were the first deportations under President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants.
Chib also criticised the Union Budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, calling it "anti-youth."

"There’s nothing in this budget for jobs, lowering inflation, or addressing economic inequality. After listening to the budget, it’s clear that Modi and the BJP government are trying to win votes in Bihar," he said.
Chib argued that the youth, poor people, middle class, and small industries have been neglected in the budget.
On February 1, Sitharaman presented her eighth consecutive Budget, which included plans for reforms and more financial support for welfare programmes.
