Congress party’s central election committee (CEC) on Monday finalised another list of 23 candidates for the second and third phases of the forthcoming assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
Addressing reporters after a lengthy four-hour meeting in New Delhi, the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president, Tariq Hameed Karra, told reporters that discussions for 29 seats in the second and third phases held with all stakeholders had been positive.
The CEC wanted more details. “We were asked to provide more information about one of the seats out of six going to polls in phase-II and about five seats out of 23 going to polls in phase-III,” he added
So far agreements on the 23 seats has been finalised, including five for the second and 18 for phase three. Details of another seat sought by the committee will be shared later this evening.
Party leaders had also informed the CEC that details sought on five other seats will be provided through the party president’s office only after due arrangements had been made.
Candidates contesting for Phase-II of the elections whose names have been finalised are Mumtaz Khan from Reasi; Bhupender Jamwal from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi; Iftikar Ahmed from Rajouri (ST); Tariq Hameed Karra from Central Shalteng; ; Shabir Ahmad Khan from Thannamandi (ST) and Mohammad Shahnawaz Choudhary from Surankote (ST).
Congress has forged a pre-poll alliance with the NC in Jammu and Kashmir. Under the said agreement, NC will contest 51 seats while Congress will fight it out on 32 of the remaining seats.
Friendly contests will be held in five seats and one seat has been left for CPI (M) and one for Panthers Party.
Both Congress and NC have repeatedly said that the alliance with vice-versa was important to form a collective unified front against the BJP.
