Speculation continues to swirl around the abrupt resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, with opposition leaders demanding clarity from the government amid what they describe as a deafening silence from both the Centre and the BJP.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday raised serious doubts about the circumstances of Dhankhar’s departure, hinting at possible hidden motives behind the move. "The government should answer why he resigned. I can see ‘dal mein kuch kaala hai’ (something is fishy). His health is fine. He has always defended the RSS and the BJP. The nation deserves to know who or what is behind his resignation," Kharge said, referring to the Vice President’s strong ideological alignment with the ruling party.
Kharge, who often clashed with Dhankhar during Parliamentary sessions, pointed out that the former West Bengal Governor appeared to be in good health, contradicting the official explanation that he stepped down due to health concerns. The resignation, which came on Monday — the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament — stunned many in the political establishment. Dhankhar, 74, cited health reasons for his immediate exit, but several opposition members said they found the explanation unconvincing.

Even West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a long-time critic of Dhankhar, remarked that he appeared to be "healthy and absolutely fine," further intensifying speculation of an internal fallout. Adding fuel to the fire was a conspicuously delayed response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Over 15 hours after Dhankhar’s resignation became public, the Prime Minister issued a short, uncharacteristically terse tweet acknowledging the development — a gesture many in the opposition viewed as symbolic of a deeper rift.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the party in the Lok Sabha, seized on the Prime Minister’s subdued reaction, saying it "revealed the political nature of the resignation." As political circles continue to buzz with speculation, the Centre has yet to offer a comprehensive statement addressing the concerns raised. The silence, opposition leaders argue, is only deepening public doubt over the real reasons behind Dhankhar’s departure.
