Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticised the central government on Saturday, asserting that the Enforcement Directorate's chargesheet against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case would not intimidate the party.
Kharge dismissed the action as politically motivated and claimed it was part of a vendetta. He emphasised that the timing of the chargesheet, which coincided with the All India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Ahmedabad, was no mere coincidence.
The Enforcement Directorate's chargesheet, filed on April 9, named Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as accused in the National Herald money laundering case.
Special Judge Vishal Gogne reviewed the chargesheet and scheduled further proceedings for April 25, to consider taking cognizance of the case. Along with the Gandhis, the chargesheet also includes Congress leader Sam Pitroda and Suman Dubey as accused individuals.
Kharge also took aim at the government and the BJP, accusing them of spreading rumors about the Waqf issue. He called on the party to expose the BJP's conspiracy and claimed that the Supreme Court had given weight to concerns raised by Congress and other opposition parties regarding the Waqf Bill. Kharge asserted that Congress had successfully united the opposition against the bill and gained the support of all constituents of the INDIA bloc.
Earlier, the Supreme Court took note of the Centre's assurances regarding the protection of Waqf properties, including those classified as Waqf-by-user, which had been officially notified or registered. The Centre also pledged that no non-Muslim members would be appointed to Waqf Councils or boards until the next hearing, scheduled for the first week of May.
