Poet Kumar Vishwas has sparked controversy with remarks indirectly aimed at actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha and his daughter, actor Sonakshi Sinha. During a poetry event in Uttar Pradesh, Vishwas appeared to comment on Sonakshi Sinha’s interfaith marriage, drawing widespread criticism.
At the event, Kumar Vishwas said, "Teach your children the Ramayana, or someone else might take away the 'Lakshmi' of your house, even if the house is named 'Ramayana'."
Shatrughan Sinha’s Mumbai home is famously named "Ramayana," and Sonakshi Sinha recently married her longtime partner, actor Zaheer Iqbal. Many interpreted Vishwas’s statement as a dig at the Sinha family and Sonakshi Sinha’s choice of husband.
Strong reactions from Congress leaders
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate condemned Kumar Vishwas’s comments, calling them “cheap” and “lewd.” She questioned his views, saying, “Doesn’t a girl have the right to marry someone she loves? If Kumar Vishwas had truly studied the Ramayana, he would have understood love.”
Shrinate further criticised Vishwas for promoting religious intolerance and hypocrisy.
Surendra Rajput, another Congress leader, also slammed Kumar Vishwas, saying his remarks were offensive and uncalled for.
He tweeted, “Kumar Vishwas, you also have a daughter. The way you tried to tarnish Shatrughan Sinha and his daughter Sonakshi Sinha, this negativity will come back to you.” Rajput added that even “Lord Rama would not forgive such behavior.”
Public outrage and online debate
The comments from Kumar Vishwas have ignited a heated debate online. Many social media users criticized the poet for his remarks, accusing him of crossing the line for applause.
Meanwhile, Kumar Vishwas has yet to respond to the backlash or clarify his comments.
The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing societal debate over interfaith marriages and personal choices, with Sonakshi Sinha and her marriage becoming the focal point of the controversy.
