President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of George Kurian after the end of his Rajya Sabha term, with the focus now shifting to Ravneet Bittu. Ravneet Bittu’s Rajya Sabha term also ended on Sunday, and political parties, including the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), are waiting to see whether he too will resign, as he was not re-nominated to the Upper House.

President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday accepted the resignation of the Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries with immediate effect.

Kurian’s Rajya Sabha term ended on Sunday. He had not been re-nominated.

A communication from Rashtrapati Bhavan said, “The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of George Kurian from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution.”

Bittu’s term also expired on Sunday. He represented Rajasthan in the Upper House. Meanwhile, with Punjab set to go to assembly polls in late November this year or early 2027, Ravneet Bittu may play a crucial role in the state’s politics.

He may be asked to continue for six months under the provision of law without being an MP, but he would have to be re-nominated within that period.
