Former Chief Minister of J&K Mehbooba Mufi has criticized attack on TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief Mehbooba Mufti has criticized the escalating violence in West Bengal, describing the law and order situation as alarming following the recent state elections, which saw the BJP emerging victorious.

Mufti highlighted the attack on TMC opposition leader Abhishek Banerjee by a mob as a disconcerting sign of the deteriorating situation. She accused authorities of selectively ignoring violence against political rivals, questioning if this represents the change West Bengal's electorate desired.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday said the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal after the BJP won the state assembly elections earlier this month is “appalling”.“The sad deteriorating law and order ever since BJP won the West Bengal elections is appalling to say the least. Where neutral institutions like the police are now being weaponised to turn a blind eye as murderous assaults are orchestrated against  political opponents like Abhishek Banerjee,” Mufti said in a post on X.

She was reacting to an attack on opposition TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee by a crowd. The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir said this is “certainly not” the change for which people of West Bengal cast their votes.“Is this the change people of West Bengal voted for? Certainly not,” she added.

Pointing  to the attack on TMC opposition leader Abhishek Banerjee as indicative of the worsening conditions, she criticized authorities for selectively ignoring violence against political rivals, questioning the electorate's desired change.”Where neutral institutions like the police are now being weaponised to turn a blind eye as murderous assaults are orchestrated against political opponents like Abhishek Banerjee,” she remarked.

Pertinently, all opposition parties, with Congress on the forefront, have strongly criticized attack on TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday, terming the developments that followed as unfortunate in a democracy. Congress has already sharpened attack against BJP on this and raised questions on the new government’s inability to check violence in the state.
