Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar said farmers are in distress due to recent heavy rains and floods in Marathwada and other regions.

The Maharashtra Congress on Monday accused both the state and central governments of neglecting the state, claiming it is no longer the "beloved" after the ruling parties’ poor performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Vijay Wadettiwar, Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, highlighted the distress faced by farmers following recent heavy rains and floods that ravaged Marathwada and other parts of the state. He criticised the ruling MahaYuti alliance, accusing state ministers of prioritising cultural events over the plight of farmers.

“While the agriculture ministers at both state and central levels remain indifferent, farmers are left wondering who to turn to for help,” said Wadettiwar.

He also pointed out the swift response of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to similar crises in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, where Rs 3,448 crore was allocated for flood relief, contrasting it with the lack of such support for Maharashtra.

Wadettiwar questioned why Chouhan has not yet visited Maharashtra, accusing the state government of failing to request central assistance. “Don’t they see the tears of the poor farmers who need help? Is Maharashtra no longer the ‘beloved’ of the Centre?” he asked.

The opposition leader demanded to know when a Union minister or central team would assess the damage in Maharashtra’s farmlands, asking whether any support from the Centre would be forthcoming.

He also criticised the MahaYuti’s focus on election-oriented schemes such as the "Ladki Bahin" initiative, while ignoring the pressing concerns of farmers.

“People are tired of the MahaYuti’s false promises. Instead of running after votes, they should be seeking relief for our farmers,” Wadettiwar said.
