Eyeing 2026 Assembly elections, the Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party has initiated a major reshuffle in its leadership. On Friday, the party replaced presidents for 25 organisational districts.

Notably, 17 of these districts have been assigned new faces, while leadership in eight key districts, including North and South Kolkata, remains unchanged.

According to party sources, most of the newly appointed district presidents have strong affiliations with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

“The inclusion of several senior organisational leaders among the new appointees indicates BJP’s intent to fortify its grassroots network and elevate the role of experienced hands within the party, instead of depending on newcomers and defectors from other parties,” said a BJP leader.

Despite this major announcement, the presidents for 18 organisational districts are yet to be named, and no official timeline has been provided for their selection. Speculation is rife that the new state BJP president will be announced only after leadership changes are finalised across all 42 districts. Within party circles, discussions are already underway regarding potential candidates for the state leadership position.

Among the key changes, Chandicharan Roy has replaced lawyer Arijit Bakshi as the president of North Kolkata Suburbs, while former district president Sushant Bera has been reinstated in Arambagh, replacing Purshura MLA Biman Ghosh. In Serampore, Suman Ghosh has been appointed as the new district president.

Basirhat has also witnessed a leadership shift, with Sukalyan Vaidya taking over from Tapas Ghosh, a close aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.

In Asansol, Devtanu Bhattacharya, a leader associated with Hindu Samhati and the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Birbhum in the last election, has been appointed as the district president. Devtanu is known for his strong ties with the RSS.

In Kanthi, a crucial bastion of the opposition leader, Somnath Roy has been appointed as the district president, replacing MLA Arup. Similarly, in Haldia, Malay Singh has been given the organisational responsibility, replacing defecting MLA Tapsi Mandal.

The BJP’s ongoing reshuffle reflects its strategic efforts to consolidate power and reinforce its organisational structure as it gears up for the crucial 2026 Assembly elections.
