With PSA and detention of MLA snowballing into a political row in the Union Territory of J&K, Aam Aadmi Party leadership is seen as using this as 'opportunity' to gain the foothold and expand its base in some vital areas where the cadres remained inactive following loss in the elections as well as due to lack of a versatile leadership.
Following dramatic events seen on Thursday when NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah was not allowed to meet AAP MP Sanjay Singh, AAP appealed to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to convene an emergency Assembly session and visit Doda to assess the situation in the wake of clashes between protesters and security forces.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led party also appealed to the people of the Union Territory to raise their voice in support of Malik, the MLA from Doda.“Our simple appeal to the Jammu and Kashmir government is to convene an emergency Assembly session, ensure that the chief minister visits Doda and personally assesses the ground situation,” Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Jammu and Kashmir spokesperson Muddasir Hassan said here.
He said AAP leaders are not being allowed to visit Doda and “even our voices are being silenced as we are not permitted to speak freely to the media”.Hassan also appealed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to raise their voice in support of Malik, who represents the Doda constituency in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.
The visit of AAP MP and senior leader Sanjay Singh to Jammu is being seen as a step in direction of revitalising its weakened foothold in J&K , said a leader. There was no strong leadership in any constituency seen during or after the elections and efforts made at the cadre level had also gone haywire as there was no follow up seen by central leadership, he explained. However, for the last few days as the party name has gone once again into reckoning with MLA Mehraj Malik's name associated with the party and his arrest getting a strong political support, the party leadership is now eyeing to expand its base in the UT.
Singh's visit is not merely to express solidarity with Malik and his family, but to deliver a clear message that AAP leadership is there to be seen as a reckoning political face . The leadership is also said to be thinking to move MLA's case in the Supreme Court, thereby implying that it wants to be seen in 'political business' in J&K as a major party rather than in the 'others' lot.
