NC government failing Kashmir’s youth: Mian Altaf

“Youth in Jammu and Kashmir are totally disappointed. Many of them hold PhD, postgraduate, and graduate degrees, yet no recruitment has taken place so far. The process, as per promises made in the manifesto, should have begun from day one, with advertisements sent to recruitment agencies for the welfare of youth in Jammu and Kashmir,” Larvi said.

Senior Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leader and Member of Parliament Mian Altaf Ahmad Larvi on Sunday criticised CM Omar’s government for failing to launch recruitment drives, saying that lakhs of educated youth with multiple degrees are feeling helpless. Speaking at the Halle Bolle Conclave at the Radisson Collection, Srinagar, Larvi criticised the NC’s inaction in addressing the plight of highly qualified youth in Kashmir, who hold multiple degrees and are sitting at home due to failed policies.

He said that the government has not started any significant recruitment process.

Larvi added that as elected representatives, it is their duty to raise the voice of the people who voted them into power.

“After all, we were chosen by the people, and we must fight for their rights,” he said.

Responding to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent remarks on smart meter installation, Larvi said, “It would be better for Omar Sahib to speak thoughtfully and with understanding.”

No doubt, educated youth in Kashmir are struggling to make ends meet, and if not addressed, it is going to turn into a mass anti-government movement. The youth unemployment rate is particularly high at 17.4 per cent, more than double the national average of 10.2 per cent.  Challenges include intense competition for limited government jobs. As of March 2025, there were a total of 32,474 government posts vacant in Jammu and Kashmir across 38 departments, with the Health and Medical Education department having the highest number of vacancies.
