National Conference and the People's Democratic Party have initiated discussions with the central leadership of the Congress party regarding a potential alliance for the upcoming assembly elections. The information was shared by Congress' newly-appointed state unit chief Tariq Hameed Karra on Monday.
"To my knowledge, the National Conference has already approached the central leadership for an alliance," Karra stated.
"At some level, talks have happened," said Karra, when asked if PDP approached the grand old party for an alliance.
Congress is "very sure" that if the regional parties - a part of the opposition INDIA bloc - continue with the aim for which the alliance was formed, "we will succeed", Karra said, adding that the grand old party is open to ally with any party whose like-minded.
"Whether they belong to Jammu or Kashmir, the only criterion is they should be like-minded. We are open to all like-minded parties that have raised a flag against the hegemony and dictatorial attitude of the BJP. However, we have to deliberate, draw certain parameters, and see where the interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and those of the Congress are safeguarded before taking that decision," he stated.
Speaking to the media, Karra emphasized Congress' priority of capitalizing on Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra momentum to address Jammu and Kashmir's distresses, highlighting the importance of synchronizing and channelizing yatra's feel-good factor to benefit the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Restoration of statehood is paramount for Congress, with Karra condemning the Centre's decision to relegate Jammu and Kashmir to a Union Territory as unconstitutional.
Karra also stated that the Ghulam Nabi Azad-led Democratic Progressive Azad Party has been outrightly rejected by the people, who punished the outfit for abandoning Congress.
