BJP leader Nitin Nabin has been elected unopposed as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party and will formally take charge on January 20. The ceremony, scheduled for 11.30 am at the party headquarters today, will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home minister Amit Shah, Defence minister Rajnath Singh, and other senior party members.
Nabin was declared as the new BJP president after 37 nomination papers were filed in his favour, with no other candidates emerging for the post. Forty-five years old and a five-term MLA from Bihar, Nabin’s elevation is described as a 'generational shift' and the beginning of a new era for the party. The BJP will witness a significant leadership change today (January 20), with Nabin set to assume office as the party’s National President, succeeding JP Nadda.
The process, overseen by National Returning Officer Dr K. Laxman, concluded with Nabin being elected unopposed. A grand ceremony is scheduled for today at the BJP headquarters. Laxman said the election process began after 30 of the BJP’s 36 State Presidents were elected, surpassing the minimum requirement of 50 per cent.
On January 16, notification of schedule of events was announced and electoral Roll was published. The statement added that 37 sets of nomination papers were filed in favour of Nabin.
“On scrutiny, all sets of nomination papers were found to be duly filled up in the required format and were valid. Now, after the period of withdrawal, in my capacity of National Returning Officer, Sangathan Parv, Bharatiya Janata Party, I hereby announce that only one name, that of Shri Nitin Nabin, has been proposed for the post of National President of Bhartiya Janata Party,” Dr Laxman said.
