Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, claimed on Saturday that the caste survey conducted by Nitish Kumar’s government in Bihar was merely a strategy to mislead the public.
Speaking at the 'Samvidhan Suraksha Sammelan' in Patna, Gandhi emphasised the importance of a nationwide caste census to determine the participation of OBCs, Dalits, and workers in various sectors, including the bureaucracy.
“The caste census is not just about counting castes; it’s about understanding how much of the country’s wealth is shared among them,” Gandhi said. He criticised the Bihar government’s survey, calling it a superficial exercise meant to deceive the people.
Gandhi also targeted the BJP, alleging that its MPs from backward communities feel powerless. “BJP MPs from OBC, Dalit, and tribal communities tell me they are ‘put in a cage.’ While they may have representation, their power has been taken away,” he remarked.
He accused the BJP and its allies of centralizing power and wealth in the hands of a few, mentioning industrialists like Ambani and Adani. “The power of the people has been handed over to big corporations and the RSS, which now controls every organisation,” he added.
Gandhi also criticised RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat for his recent statement that the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya marked India’s “true independence.” Gandhi argued that this undermines the significance of India’s independence on August 15, 1947.
“If Mohan Bhagwat claims that India didn’t gain independence on August 15, 1947, he is rejecting the Constitution of India,” Gandhi said, questioning the intent behind such statements.
