Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are set to join the Congress on September 6 ahead of the Haryana Assembly polls, according to a PTI report.
"Both Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat will join the party on Friday. Whether one of them will contest or both will contest will become clear soon," the sources said.
Both of them met former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday. The Congress released a picture of Gandhi with Phogat and Punia on its official X handle.
Punia, who won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Games, and Phogat, who became the first woman wrestler to reach the Olympics final but was disqualified for being slightly overweight, met Gandhi. Following her disqualification, Phogat announced her retirement from the sport.
Both Punia and Phogat were involved in a protest over sexual harassment allegations against former BJP MP and then Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in 2023.
The Congress and AAP are discussing the distribution of seats for the Haryana Assembly polls, and both sides are engaging in tough negotiations.
Voting on 90 assembly seats in Haryana will be held on October 5, and the votes will be counted on October 8.
