Northeast states get new Governors

In a significant reshuffle of gubernatorial positions, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed new Governors for four north-eastern states, a move that reflects a strategic change in the leadership across these regions.

On Saturday night, the Rashtrapati Bhavan announced that Lakshman Prasad Acharya, formerly the Governor of Sikkim, will now serve as the Governor of Assam, with the additional charge of Manipur.

Acharya replaces Gulab Chand Kataria in Assam, who has been appointed as the new Governor of Punjab. Kataria will also serve as the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, succeeding Banwarilal Purohit.

The official communique from the Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed Purohit's resignation from his roles as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh.

The statement read, "Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Sikkim, appointed as Governor of Assam and has also been given additional charge of the Governor of Manipur."

In another significant appointment, veteran BJP leader Om Prakash Mathur will take over as the Governor of Sikkim, filling the vacancy left by Acharya.

Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan, who also held additional charge of Telangana, has been appointed as the new Governor of Maharashtra, replacing Ramesh Bais. Radhakrishnan's move to Maharashtra marks a crucial shift, considering the state's political significance.

Former Union Labour and Employment Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar will succeed Radhakrishnan as the Governor of Jharkhand. Gangwar's extensive political experience is expected to bring stability and leadership to Jharkhand.

Additionally, Jishnu Dev Varma, former Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura, is set to become the new Governor of Telangana, a role that demands significant administrative acumen given the state's dynamic political landscape.

In another noteworthy appointment, K Kailashnathan, a trusted aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Chief Principal Secretary to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has been named the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

His close association with the Prime Minister and his administrative expertise make him a fitting choice for this role.

Other notable appointments include Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde from Maharashtra, who will become the Governor of Rajasthan, Ramen Deka from Assam taking over as the Governor of Chhattisgarh, and C H Vijayashankar from Karnataka named as the Governor of Meghalaya.

These appointments signal a strategic realignment in the gubernatorial positions, aimed at reinforcing governance and administrative efficiency across these states and union territories.
