Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan has escalated his battle against alleged election fraud, urging the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to conduct a comprehensive audit of election results before considering further financial assistance to the country.

Khan, who heads the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, claims that widespread intervention compromised the integrity of the recent general elections, demanding transparency and accountability.

In a letter addressed to IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, the PTI expressed reservations about the electoral process, citing significant irregularities and intervention during the vote counting. The party insists on a thorough investigation into the alleged fraud, stressing the importance of adhering to good governance principles and transparency in financial assistance agreements.

The PTI's letter to the IMF calls for an audit of at least 30% of national and provincial assembly seats, arguing that such an assessment could be completed within two weeks. The party proposes the involvement of indigenous organizations with expertise in election monitoring to conduct the audit, emphasizing the need for credible and impartial scrutiny of the electoral process.

While Pakistan grapples with economic challenges, including the need for significant financial assistance, the United States has voiced support for the country's efforts to pursue macroeconomic reforms. With Pakistan's reliance on IMF funding to avoid economic breakdown, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of long-term economic stability and urged continued collaboration with international financial institutions.

As Pakistan navigates its economic trajectory, the IMF's upcoming review mission holds critical significance. Scheduled to visit Islamabad in the coming months, the mission aims to finalize the terms of a potential bailout package, crucial for addressing the country's balance of payments challenges. The outcome of these discussions will shape Pakistan's economic landscape in the foreseeable future.

Imran Khan's appeal to the IMF underscores the intersection of political accountability and economic stability in Pakistan. As the country grapples with electoral integrity concerns, its engagement with international financial institutions like the IMF is pivotal for navigating economic challenges. The outcome of these efforts will shape Pakistan's trajectory and determine its ability to address pressing economic needs while upholding democratic principles.
