Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Modi government over the cancellation of the NEET (UG) 2026 examination, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi's so-called 'amrit kaal' has turned into a 'vish kaal' (poison-filled era) for the country. He said the hard work, sacrifices, and dreams of more than 22 lakh students have been "crushed by this corrupt BJP regime"
The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha also alleged that Modi and the BJP are “partners in the theft” of students' future.“The only rule in the market where your hard work and dreams are being auctioned is this: the bigger the theft, the bigger the reward,” Gandhi said.
In a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi said, “The NEET UG 2026 has been cancelled. The hard work, sacrifices, and dreams of more than 22 lakh students have been crushed by this corrupt BJP regime. Some fathers took loans, some mothers sold their jewellery, lakhs of children stayed up all night studying, and in return, they got paper leaks, government negligence, and organised corruption in education.” “This is not just a failure – it's a crime against the future of the youth,” he said.
Every time, the paper mafia gets away scot-free, while honest students bear the punishment, Gandhi added. He also said that lakhs of students will now endure the same mental stress, financial burden and uncertainty again. If one's destiny is determined not by hard work but by money and connections, what meaning will education hold, the former Congress chief wondered.
In another post, he said, “I want to bring a serious matter to the attention of the country's youth. Do one thing – search it yourself on Google: ‘Who was the DG of NTA during the horrific NEET 2024 scam, and where has the Modi government seated him today?’ See that? Get it now?” Gandhi added, “The BJP rewards those who toy with the futures of millions of hardworking students like you in this very way – it protects them, and on top of that, promotes them to higher positions. It's clear – Modi ji and the BJP are themselves partners in the theft of your future.
“The only rule in the market where your hard work and dreams are being auctioned off is this: the bigger the theft, the bigger the reward.” The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Tuesday cancelled the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) held on May 3 amid allegations of paper leak, with the government asking the CBI to carry out a comprehensive inquiry into the “irregularities”.
The national examination for students seeking admission to undergraduate courses in medical colleges will now be held afresh on dates to be notified separately. In a statement on X, the NTA said the decision was taken to maintain transparency and preserve trust in the national examination system.
