Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Pradeep Verma and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Sarfaraz Ahmed were today elected unopposed in the Rajya Sabha elections held for two seats in Jharkhand. Jharkhand Assembly Secretary Syed Javed Haider gave certificates to both the newly elected MPs.
Both BJP and JMM candidates were declared winners unopposed there was no third candidate filing nomination in the polls. The JMM candidate claimed the support of 47 legislators, while the BJP candidate Pradeep Verma had not less than 31 candidates in the 81-member Assembly of Jharkhand.
Notably, Sarfaraz Ahmed resigned from the Gandey Assembly seat of Giridih on 31 December 2023. Since then, speculations have been made that JMM may send him to Rajya Sabha and may make Kalpana Soren a candidate from Gandey seat to contest a bypoll. However, the bypoll has not been announced yet.
Pradeep Verma is considered to be an old and dedicated worker of the BJP. After Rajya Sabha MP Sameer Oraon was given a Lok Sabha ticket from Lohardaga seat, BJP made Pradeep Verma its candidate for Rajya Sabha.
After being elected to Rajya Sabha, Sarfaraz Ahmed met Kalpana, wife of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Kalpana Soren congratulated both the leaders elected to the Rajya Sabha.
