The Odisha Congress was hit by a massive wave of resignations on Saturday as 41 close aides and supporters of expelled leader Mohammed Moquim walked out of the party. The mass exit, which includes senior figures like a former PCC secretary and a party spokesperson, has thrown the state unit into fresh turmoil just as election season nears.
The group — comprising former block presidents, Mahila Congress secretaries, and youth leaders — did not hold back in their parting shot. While expressing this in their letter of resignation, they also attacked the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), saying that the current Odisha PCC leaders were "ineffective and directionless." They said that this decision of expelling Moquim was a final nail in the coffin, as this decision was arbitrary, indicating that the Odisha PCC leaders were completely out of sync with grass-root party leaders.
According to the rebels, the party in Odisha has failed to provide a clear political roadmap, leaving ground-level workers demoralised and ignored. They claimed that the "growing disconnect" at the top has made it impossible to continue within the organisation. While the OPCC has yet to issue a formal response to the walkout, the timing couldn't be worse for the party.
This exodus follows Moquim’s recent bombshell that he plans to launch a new political party by the end of March. With a significant chunk of his Cuttack-Barabati support base now officially following him out the door, the Congress faces a serious uphill battle to keep its local organisation from collapsing entirely.
