Sonia Gandhi to chair Congress strategy meet on July 15

The Parliament is expected to witness intense discussions on security and national policy matters, making the strategic planning meeting called by Sonia Gandhi all the more significant.

Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), Sonia Gandhi, has convened a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Strategic Group on July 15 to chalk out the party’s strategy for the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. The Monsoon Session is scheduled to take place from July 21 to August 21, with no sittings on August 13 and 14 in view of the Independence Day celebrations.


Ahead of the session, the Central Government has also announced an all-party meeting on July 19. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the government has called this meeting to discuss the legislative agenda and seek consensus before the Monsoon Session begins.He stated that the session would start on July 21 and conclude on August 21. This Monsoon Session will be the first since Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 in response to a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. 


The Parliament is expected to witness intense discussions on security and national policy matters, making the strategic planning meeting called by Sonia Gandhi all the more significant. The previous Budget Session of Parliament began on January 31, and witnessed the passage of key legislation, including the Waqf Amendment Bill. According to Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, the Budget Session was divided into two parts.

The first part saw nine sittings each in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, while the second part included 17 sittings in each House, bringing the total to 26 sittings. The Lok Sabha debated and cast votes on the requests for grants for specific ministries, including Railways, Jal Shakti, and Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, during the second half of the session. On March 21, the demands for grants for the remaining departments and ministries were collectively voted on. On the same day, the Lok Sabha also introduced, debated, and approved the relevant Appropriations Bill. 


Additional financial bills, such as Appropriation Bills pertaining to the Second and Final Batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants for 2024-25, Excess Demands for Grants for 2021-22, Supplementary Demands for Grants for Manipur for 2024-25, and Demands for Grant on Account for 2025-26 for the state of Manipur, were passed by the Lok Sabha on March 11. On March 25, the Lok Sabha approved the Finance Bill. 


The operations of the Ministries of Education, Railways, Health & Family Welfare, and Home Affairs were discussed in the Rajya Sabha. The government and opposition parties are anticipated to participate in important discussions and legislative work during the next Monsoon Session as Parliament gets ready to reconvene.
