Amid a deafening roar of whistles and cheers, actor-turned-politician Vijay made a high-profile return to the spotlight at Mamallapuram on Sunday. His arrival at the private meeting hall wasn't just a public appearance; it was a clear signal that his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is shifting into high gear as the state counts down the final months to the Assembly elections.
The timing is critical. The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is already vibrating with activity— the AIADMK has hit the ground running with its "Save Tamil Nadu" slogan, while the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is leaning heavily on its welfare record, particularly its schemes for women. Into this mix, Vijay is positioning TVK as the "practical" alternative. He has consistently told his followers that unlike established players who make "sweeping" promises, he intends to stick to what is actually doable and accountable.
Until today, Vijay had been notably quiet. Following a massive show of strength in Erode back in mid-December, he had stayed away from the public eye, even as controversies like the 'Janayan' film probe demand swirled around him. His return in Mamallapuram felt like a calculated move to break that silence. The event itself was handled with corporate-style precision; about 3,000 functionaries were scanned in via QR codes on digital ID cards, a move that suggests the party is prioritising discipline over chaotic crowds.
The party’s leadership is already mapping out the next move. General Secretary N Anand confirmed the focus is now entirely on election readiness, while executive coordinator Sengottaiyan revealed that a massive statewide tour will kick off from Chennai on January 26. The plan is to cover all 234 constituencies. As for the big question — whether TVK will go it alone or hunt for partners — the leadership remains tight-lipped, insisting that the final call belongs solely to Vijay. For now, the recent allocation of the "whistle" as the party's official symbol has clearly given the cadre a fresh burst of energy.
