Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has launched a portal for those who could not cast their votes both in Lok Sabha and recently concluded by-polls.

“As promised yesterday, I have launched a portal where genuine voters can register their names, who were not allowed to vote in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections and the recently concluded Assembly Bypolls. Whoever was not allowed to vote, can register themselves, and full secrecy will be ensured.

Here’s the link:- https://savedemocracywb.com,” said Adhikari taking to X.

The Leader of Opposition also mentioned that if the Election Commission of India (ECI) gives time then he will meet the officials of ECI to inform about the incident.

Few observations on the exercise

There is no denying that in a democratic set-up, every individual has the right to protest in order to register one’s grievances. However, it is imperative that the mechanism adopted for the same should not appear like a mere eyewash.

The post which Adhikari has shared on his X account along with the link of the ‘Save Democracy Portal’ promises to secure the complainant’s personal details.

One can register their complaint on not being allowed to cast vote with the help of their contact details and Aadhaar number.

On completing the process, a complaint number is generated, which proves that one has registered themselves successfully.

Although the BJP leader has promised to maintain secrecy, there is no insight on how the complainants authenticity can be verified through the process.

It is possible that anyone, who is unhappy with the dispensation at the state can lodge a complaint, although he might have exercised the adult franchise without facing any hindrances.

Hence, authenticity of the exercise appears banal.

Protest is legit in a democratic country, but the means adopted to register one’s disapproval should have credibility at least, when it has no connection with legality and authenticity.

Adhikari added: “Droupadi Murmu is the head of the Constitution. Not Mamata Banerjee but BR Ambedkar has given the right to the citizens of the country to vote. The agents of Trinamool Congress (TMC) have acted as goons inside the booth. The trend that TMC has set by not allowing people to vote is dangerous.”

He, further, alleged that in West Bengal perfume is sprayed on buttons to identify who has voted for TMC. Tapes are put on buttons having other party logos, so that people cannot press other symbols on the EVMs.
