A voter turnout of 61 per cent was witnessed in the two Lok Sabha constituencies in Goa till 3 pm in the third phase of the general elections on Tuesday, officials said. As per data shared by the election authorities, 61.28 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in North Goa, while a 61.5 per cent turnout was recorded in South Goa. Polling at 1,725 centres, 863 in North Goa and 862 in South Goa, began at 7 am.

Out of the 14 segments, highest turnout of 45.69% was recorded in Chikkodi, followed by Shimoga 44.98%, and least 38.06% in Raichur.

Despite sporadic rains in most parts of Karnataka, the 14 segments going to polls today are facing heat wave-like conditions, with maximum temperatures ranging between 38 and 44 degrees Celsius in most districts. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Meena told PTI that they have factored in information on north Karnataka region witnessing higher than usual temperatures and have made all necessary arrangements to ensure that people are not deterred from coming out of their homes to vote. “Fans and drinking water in the waiting areas as well as ambulances on standby are some of the arrangements made keeping the harsh weather in mind,” he added.

A total of 227 candidates, 206 men and 21 women are in the fray for the second phase covering the northern districts of the state where more than 2.59 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in 28,269 polling stations.
